An extra opportunity for young people

Our Leadership Camps take place during the regular weeks of camp, though the youth leaders are housed separately with their adult mentors and do many different activities.
People wishing to attend CiT or LiT must register as campers AND apply for the program. If you have already registered as a camper, you do not have to fill out the registration form again - just fill out the application linked above.
Steps to becoming a CiT or LiT
  1. Apply
  2. Have your priest (or senior warden) to serve as a reference. Send your priest or senior warden the link and ask her/him to fill it out.
  3. Fill out the camp registration

Leaders in Training (LIT) is open to people ages 13-16.  This is an alternative for people who aren’t able to come to the other week of camp with their own age group, or people who want to come for more than one week.  They participate in afternoon activities with the campers, (unlike CiT, they won't be in charge of other campers or be leading any programs).
The leadership program is based on Spirituality and  self-discovery (looking at your own gifts) and working with a team (looking at the gifts of others).  And lead by clergy, lay leaders, and teachers within our Diocese.

Counselors in Training (CIT) is a leadership program for people interested in becoming counselors at our camp. CITs live in their own cabins (with adult mentors) and spend time learning about children and also working with the campers.  They create and run the Thursday evening activity.

CITs stay at "Tinuwen", or the tree-house cabins as we like to call them.  They spend the majority of the first half of week learning about becoming a counselor, studying child development, Safeguarding God's Children and many other topics.  The second half is spent with the campers.  They also plan and implement the Thursday evening activity.
They get to have a great time building friendships and learning new skills.
It is not a requirement that all counselors go through this program, but it sure helps those who do!

Qualifications:
Attend an Episcopal Church, or one with similar doctrine and beliefs
Age 16, 17, or18
Will be attending high school (or home school equivelant) in the fall of that year
Able and willing to follow the rules set forth by the camp, and encourage others to do so
Enjoys working with younger children
Practices appropriate boundaries - with children, peers, and adults
Have attended at least one week of Episcopal Youth Camp in the Diocese of Western Michigan.

Payment

The fee for a week of Youth Leadership is $335, with a $35 discount is you apply by Easter Monday.

We do know that most of the campers attending a Youth Leadership camp are attending for a second week, and the price can be quite a bit. We do offer financial assistance, and it's almost expected that people attending for more than one week will apply for that. Our goal is to get as many young people as we can to be trained as leaders in our diocese.

After your camper registration is received and processed (spring at the earliest), you will be mailed a financial invoice, the Camper Information Record, and an application for financial assistance (scholarships). Click here for information on the cost of camp and our policy for awarding financial assistance.

Do not hesitate to contact Gennie Callard with any questions. Click here to send her an e-mail.
